Hello, World!
My name is Maddux Eckerling (he/him).
I am a queer person who will be studying Sociology, Queer studies, and Human Rights and Justice Studies at San Francisco State University starting in the Fall of 2023. My goal is to get my MSW and then, go into community organizing and policy advocacy.
As a current High School student, I dedicated my senior project to educating my community, a small town in California, on what it is like to be an LGBTQ+ youth. We held a live panel to first enlighten the community on our struggles as LGBTQ+ youth. Then, we opened up the conversation to answer the audience’s burning questions about our experiences and to share how they/you can best support us.
During this panel, I received many questions from my community and would like to both answer those that were covered and also talk about all the questions the panel didn’t have time to discuss.
As an aspiring activist, my goal is to have the hard conversations and answer the awkward questions that need to be answered but no one wants to talk about. I also want to explore the queer experience and learn about new identities.
Finally, I am a history buff! LGBTQ+ people have been a part of society since the beginning. Exploring both the movements that gave us a platform and recognition and also all the wonderful things created by LGBTQ+ people is a passion of mine.
As I learn new facts and explore my community’s past and present, I can’t wait to share my findings with you all!
Thank you for joining me on this journey of discovery,
Maddux
